The Burbs

Experimenting with entrepreneurship, the class had to fabricate ten unique products to sell at the end of the semester. I took the opportunity to create a kinetic sculpture at human scale.

Concept Development

Born from ideas from wood carving, I took a step further to create a designed product that can be hand-made at scale. I created a design that was friendly and invited interaction and play while still emphasizing natural shapes and materials. The objects grouped together interact, giving the user the opportunity to create their own story.

The Prototype

The first prototype set was created with solid basswood. To keep production costs low, I gathered local scrap wood from workshops and lumber sellers to create the final sets of burbs.

Final Product

The final product was sold in sets of three, one big burbs and two egg burbs. In total, ten sets were created and sold. Each burb is unique and individually created with hand selected scrap material. A natural drying oil finish was applied to retain the natural qualities of the wood. Customers were able to select their own families of burbs when a set was purchased.
